Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay immediately fell in love when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. While DuVernay lived within Compton with her family, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then examine their junk. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective.
